The Benefits of Omega-3 DHA

For pregnant and nursing women, Omega-3 DHA helps with the optimal development and function of your baby's brain and eyes.

What is DHA?
Docosahexaenoic acid, DHA, is a long-chain fatty acid found throughout the body and is a major structural fat in the brain, heart and eyes. In fact, DHA represents about 97% of all Omega-3 fats in the brain and 93% of all Omega-3 fats in the retina. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered "essential" fatty acids, which means our bodies cannot produce them, so we must get them through food.

The benefits of Omega-3 DHA
A growing body of research continues to support the important role that DHA plays for both mother and baby. Specifically, DHA is important for optimal infant brain, eye, and nervous system development, and has been shown to support a healthy pregnancy.

Omega-3 DHA is important for healthy visual and mental development of an infant in utero- particularly the third trimester- and throughout infancy. While a baby is in the womb, the brain grows more rapidly than in any other stage of infant or child development. Rapid brain growth continues after birth with the brain tripling in size within an infant's first year. Throughout pregnancy and nursing, the baby depends on a continual supply of maternal Omega-3 DHA through the placenta and through breast milk.

Vegetarian Omega-3 DHA
At Numa, we use life's DHA™, a vegetarian source of Omega-3 DHA made from algae. Deep water fish are in fact rich in DHA because of the algae they feed on. By using a vegetarian source of algae-based DHA, we get the benefits of Omega-3 DHA while eliminating the risk of ocean-borne pollutants.
